In the distance we can see the balloon team conducting the tests of the atmosphere: Michał Chiliński and Bohdan Paterczyk from the Faculty of  Physics and the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw.

They are making physical measurements, including spectrometry, and
they are taking samples of the particulates in the air.

Their tasks include:

  • recording thermal imagery (i.e. distribution of heat on a surface).  The measurement taken automatically by a thermal camera.
  • recording hyper-spectral imagery (automatic measurement) in spectral range of 450-890 nm
  • measurement of aerosols absorption coefficient and concentration of black carbon with Aethlabs AE-51 microaethalometer
  • measurement of particles size distribution between 0.3 and 10 micrometers (Plantower PMS7003)
  • measurement of Warsaw's reflectance in range of 350 - 1050 nm (2 x Ocean Optics STS spectrometer)
  • temperature, relative humidity and pressure measurement with automatic
    meteo station and Vaisala Radiosonde
  • measurement of atmosphere optical depth with sun-photometer (in case
    of cloudless sky)
  • taking samples of the dust particles over Warsaw and  categorizing them into PM1, PM2,5 and PM10 factions (the equipment used  here is DustTrak DRX Aerosol Monitor by TSI)
  • collecting the data on the presence of bacteria, fungus spores and plant pollens (the equipment used is MAS-100 Eco Air Sampler by Merck). The samples will be further analyzed in the laboratory at the Warsaw Uniwersity.
